You Know More Than You Think You Do

by Kathy

I often hear from clients and friends that they want to do something new, like blog, but don’t know how or are afraid to start. We all feel that way from time to time. There are so many different programs, services and software for computers that nobody can be proficient in all of them, or even 30% of them. All of those choices create a unique user experience for each of us. And the real measure of a user’s proficiency is their ability to use new technology and adapt in the programs and services they use.

You know more than you think you do. Most new bloggers start out feeling intimidated. It’s sad to think that there may be some very skilled writers out there that never get past that fear. Here’s the thing, it’s really not that difficult or advanced. Let me ask you three simple questions… 1. Do you know how to use Word? 2. Have you ever had to learn how to use a new program or service? 3. Do you know how to share photos in email or another program? If you answered yes to all three of these, you already know how to blog! If you answered “Facebook” to questions two and three, you get an additional bonus of “intermediate to advanced user”. I’m telling you, “You know more than you think you do!”

When you log in to your WordPress blog dashboard for the first time, you may feel a little lost. That’s normal with any new technology we start. It’s your ability to adapt and willingness to learn that will get you through the learning process. Start with a few shorter posts, just to get a feel for it. Write a short hello post, with image. Create a post that shares a YouTube video and add a few words of your own commentary. It will be easy to transition from a few short words and image, similar to what you already do on Facebook, to paragraphs and multiple photos.

Do you have anything you’ve been wanting to try but put it off out of fear? Are you blogging yet? Today is a good day to start!

Hi Kathy,

Love your blog! I recently set-up my new blog. We are still tweaking it but it has been a lot of fun. I have always enjoyed writing, and putting the blog together is quite a challenge, but very fun.

I am going to try and put a short welcome video together and put it on my blog. I haven’t put it on my calendar yet and I haven’t decided where I am going to shoot it, but it is high on my list of things to do. I think it would be a good way to say “Hi” to everyone that comes to my blog.
